1870 Pattern Dime Wrong Planchet Error. Type of Judd-837, Pollock-928. Rarity-8+ (for the error). Copper-Nickel. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS). 0.99 grams. 76% copper, 24% nickel. Obv: Standard Silver design with a right facing bust of Liberty as the focal feature, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with three stars. Rev: A wreath of cotton and corn surrounds the denomination 10 CENTS and date 1870, the word STANDARD inscribed along the upper border. This coin is unique for a wrong planchet error of this Judd number. We first handled it in our (Bowers and Merena's) June 1996 sale, in which it was cataloged: Pale golden toning on mostly brilliant surfaces. Struck on a planchet approximating the weight of the three-cent silver denomination, indeed, an example of P-883, J-796 is known on a planchet weighing 15.6 grains. The planchet diameter was too small for the dies; something attested to by the fact that the coin design is incomplete at the border between 5:00 and 8:00, relative to the obverse (the metal flow was simply inadequate to full out the entire diameter). A prize certain to appeal to the error collector a well as the pattern specialist. The uspatterns.com website goes further and attributes the planchet as either misrolled three-cent nickel or Judd-666 pattern cent stock. Intriguing. Provenance: Ex our (Bowers and Merena's) Herbert D. Spencer Collection sale, August 1996, lot 1199; Simpson Collection; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction XX, lot 27; Mike Byers. PCGS# 61081.
