1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Judd-1281, Pollock-1423. Rarity-4. Silver.

Handsome Gem Proof 1873 Judd-1281 Pattern Trade Dollar The Winsor-Eliasberg Specimen Numismatic Provenance to 1895 1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Judd-1281, Pollock-1423. Rarity-4. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Obv: Bust of Liberty faces left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1873 below. Liberty is wearing a wreath of leaves, her hair coiled and braided at the back of her head. Rev: An eagle with spread wings supports a shield with its left talon and clutches a group of three arrows in its right talon. A scroll crossing the shield carries the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed in the field above the eagle. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, the inscription 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE is in the field below the eagle, and the denomination TRADE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. Sharply defined in virtually all areas, both sides of this delightful Gem Proof specimen are toned in slightly mottled champagne-gold and olive-gray iridescence that is a bit bolder on the reverse. One of an extensive suite of pattern trade dollars produced in 1873, Judd-1281 was made available to contemporary collectors as part of six-piece pattern Proof sets at the price of $30 per set. The present example is actually directly traceable back to one of those sets, which first appeared at auction in S.H. and H. Chapman's 1895 sale of the celebrated Richard B. Winsor Collection. The set was acquired by J.M Clapp through that sale, went to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., and most recently appeared at auction in Legend Rare Coin Auctions' February 2023 sale of the Terra Pistacia Collection. The coins have remained together despite being offered individually in the past, which is also the case in this sale, and we sincerely hope that another collector will recognize the significance of this set by buying all six of the coins. In addition to Judd-1281, offered in this lot, the other coins in this set are Judd-1276, Judd-1293, Judd-1310, Judd-1315, and Judd-1322. Provenance: Ex S.H. and H. Chapman's sale of the Richard B. Winsor Collection, December 1895, lot 1135, part of a six-piece set that also included the Judd-1276, Judd-1293, Judd-1310, Judd-1315 and Judd-1322 specimens offered in this sale; J.M. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942, via Stack's; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E.
