1884 Pattern Annular, or Ring-Form Five-Cents. JR-1725, Pollock-1935. Rarity-7-. Aluminum. Plain Edge. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). Obv: One of Eastman Johnson's "holey" patterns, the center is perforated with an eight-sided scalloped design, around which are 13 stars, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border and the date 1884 at bottom. Rev: The denomination FIVE CENTS is split above and below the central perforation, with two shields also flanking the perforation, one left and one right. Free of any tin pesting or specks, with the surfaces retaining both their glassy reflectivity in the fields and satiny texture to the devices. Virtually pristine for the type, in fact, and among the finest of perhaps a dozen known for this Judd number. Provenance: From Superior's sale of the Dr. Walter Lee Crouch Collection, June 1977, lot 276; Heritage's ANA Signature Sale of August 1996, lot 5062, as PCGS Proof-66; Bob R.
