1892 World's Columbian Exposition Cristoforo Colombo Medal. By Luigi

1892 World's Columbian Exposition Cristoforo Colombo Medal. By Luigi

Exceedingly Rare Eglit-106 in Solid Silver 1892 World's Columbian Exposition Cristoforo Colombo Medal. By Luigi Pogliaghi (designer) and Angelo Cappucio (engraver). Eglit-106, Rulau-B10, var. Silver, Solid. MS-61 (NGC). 101.6 mm. 451.48 grams, .999 fine, 14.5 troy ounces ASW. Known as the Stefano Johnson medals for the firm that produced them in Milan, Italy, this medal in its three sizes and various metallic compositions is generally regarded as the most beautiful of all Columbian medals. This is an interesting and particularly desirable example in a fabric that we can only recall offering twice before. The size is the same as that attributed as Eglit-106, Rulau-B10, although usually we see only bronze and white metal impressions. Solid silver impressions are far rarer, and as of this writing we can confirm only the following examples: 1 - Ex our (Stack's) Gilbert Steinberg Collection sale, May 1992, lot 354. Mint State, with original leather case. 483.6 grams. 2 - Ex our sale of the Jonathan H. Kagan Collection of American Medallic Art, November 2025 Showcase Auction, lot 4327. NGC MS-63. 442.0 grams. 3 - "Sold at European auction for slightly over $7,000," as related by Steve A. Starlust in his recently published book Referencing Columbiana. 465.45 grams. The author incorrectly describes that example as "Unique Silver Award Medal" and "the only known piece in this weight in Silver." 4 - Ex NGSA VI, lot 1060. 451.48 grams. The present example. We have also offered a hollow silver example of Eglit-106, in March 2021, which medal was earlier in our March 2020 Auction. The Jonathan H. Kagan specimen in solid silver, NGC MS-63, realized $9,600 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction. This handsome piece is lightly toned in silver-olive iridescence. Signs of handling are few and confined to faint, wispy hairlines in the central obverse and surrounding reverse field areas. Fully struck, crisply rendered, and free of troublesome marks, this impressive piece is a highlight of the important medallic offerings in this sale and will certainly see spirited bidding among advanced Columbiana enthusiasts. Provenance: Ex NGSA VI, lot 1060. Click here for certification details from NGC.
