1894-S Barber Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. This is the highest graded 1894-S half dollar stickered by CAC, and it is a luxurious premium Gem that boasts superior technical quality and undeniable originality. Sharply struck with a strong frosty texture to the finish, both sides are enhanced by gently mottled reddish-apricot and powder blue iridescence. After producing only 740,000 coins in 1893, half dollar production at the San Francisco Mint soared to more than 4 million pieces in 1894. With one of the highest mintages in the series, 1894-S numbers among the most frequently encountered Barber half dollars from the 1890s. Most survivors are circulated, of course, in which grades Q. David Bowers (2019) provides an estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 coins extant. The generous mintage also helped make the 1894-S one of the more readily obtainable San Francisco Mint half dollars of its era in Mint State, although we caution bidders that the issue emerges as a surprise condition rarity beginning in certified MS-65. The present example will catch the eye of astute bidders and is well suited for an advanced Barber collection or a high grade mintmarked type set. PCGS Population: 4; 2 finer (both MS-67).
