1905 Barber Half Dollar. JD-1. Rarity-2. Proof-67 Cameo (NGC). Writing in the 2025 volume in his United States Proof Coins reference series, John W. Dannreuther sets up the desirability of this coin when he writes: The broken record of our lament about frosted dies continues, as [the 1905] is one of five dates with fewer than 20 examples PCGS certified with the cameo designation (1903, 1912, 1914, and 1915 are the others). As of this writing, 19 coins have made it through the grading gauntlet and netted a suffix. To date, the total PCGS-certified population in the Cameo designation has creeped up to only 20 coins; the corresponding NGC total is even fewer at 15 coins. That offered here is a sparkling golden-tinged Superb Gem with an uncommon degree of contrast between mirrored fields and softly frosted motifs. Fully struck, expertly preserved, and worthy of serious bidder consideration. Provenance: From the Mack C. Chase Collection. NGC Census: 8; with a single Proof-68 Cameo finer in this category. The corresponding PCGS Population is 2/1 (Proof-68 Cameo). No grading events are reported in the PCGS and NGC Deep/Ultra Cameo categories. PCGS# 86552. NGC ID: 24P9.
