1905-O Barber Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. Seldom do Mint State survivors of this challenging New Orleans Mint issue possess the superior surface preservation and strong eye appeal of this notable condition rarity. Strike detail on the obverse is universally full, that on the reverse similar in most areas, but with typical (for a New Orleans Mint Barber half) softness to the high points in and around the center. Highly lustrous and beautifully toned, mauve-gray, reddish-apricot and cobalt blue colors yield to considerable brilliance in and around the central obverse. The 1905-O is among the more readily identifiable key date issues in the Barber half dollar series due to a mintage of 505,000 coins. As with so many O-Mint issues of this type, the coiners in the Crescent City did a poor job with the 1905-O. In addition, few contemporary Americans were interested in preserving mintmarked Barber coinage. As Q. David Bowers (2019) remarks concerning Gem Uncirculated coins: "Most of these survived as a matter of chance, not intent. At the time, probably no more than a dozen or so numismatists were assembling collections of Uncirculated coins." Prior to 2020, it had been a decade since we last offered a Gem Mint State example of this challenging issue, testament to the fleeting nature of this offering.
