“A unique piece of heritage and a decorative feature…” Englebert is a Belgian tyre manufacturer founded in 1877 by Oscar Englebert, who had previously been a rubber goods merchant. It was later renamed Uniroyal, before becoming part of the Continental Group. From the 1920s onwards, the brand was associated with motor racing. In April 1928, Englebert set the world road speed record in Morocco on a 715 km circuit with a Bugatti Type 35, whilst Scuderia Ferrari went on to win 12 Formula 1 races on Englebert tyres between 1950 and 1958… We present an exceptional set of three canvases stretched over wooden frames, which can be arranged to form a folding screen. Two of them depict a young woman at the wheel, and the third a man in a racing suit pointing to the Englebert brand. The three oil portraits are set within tyres marked ‘Ballon Chevron Cordé Englebert Liège’. Two of them bear reference numbers and are dated 1925 or 1926. This set of three panels, likely originating from the brand’s headquarters in Liège, each measure approximately 200 by 70 cm. A piece of heritage and a unique decorative item…
