1940s Lumured American Acrylic Tile & Lizard Skin Purse

United States, ca. 1940s to 1950s CE. A distinctive and collectible Lumured shoulder bag, constructed using molded acrylic tiles, each inset with monitor lizard skin. The signature square pattern arose from a practical effort to use leftover scraps from alligator and lizard hides - the small, irregular pieces cut from full bodied bags. These scraps were set into the plastic tiles using acetone, then adhered to a twill fabric base to create the bag's rigid form. Because it relied on remnants rather than full hides, this type of bag was far more economical to produce than traditional exotic leather bags. The purse features a top zipper (marked "COMERCO USA" on the underside), a black fabric lining, and is remarkably well-preserved - complete with a fully functional zipper pull. It could certainly be used today as a unique statement piece, and is a great size to fit a phone and wallet. Size: 10" L x 6.5" W (25.4 cm x 16.5 cm); strap drop length: 16" L (40.6 cm) Item # 194847
