1942 Wanderers Grounds Opening Original Photos of Babe Ruth (6)

A recent discovery offered is a group of six original photographs documenting Babe Ruth’s appearance at the August 1, 1942 opening of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Wanderers Grounds recreation facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ruth flew to Nova Scotia specifically for the event and this group of photographs capture Ruth provided a hitting exhibition before an estimated 5,000 spectators. The game was apparently halted so Ruth could put on this show and following his hitting clinic he would throw 12 signed baseball's into the crowd. The photographs include two action shots of Ruth hitting at the plate, one of him sitting next to a navy sailor, one close up in his cream coloured suit, one of him swinging a bat with a cigar in his mouth and one of the field (not including Ruth). These photos were taken by an attendee of the event and have remained in one collection until now. The photographs are not professional but were printed in period. Each photo is marked with a number on the reverse side.
