1949 The Philadelphia Award Medal. By Violet Oakley. Bronze. Choice Mint State. With Original Case. 75.5 mm. Obv: William Penn in armor, holding sword and shield, with peripheral legend THE PHILADELPHIA AWARD / FOUNDED 1921 BY EDWARD W. BOK. Field inscribed to recipient TO FREDERICK H. / ALLEN / 1949. Rev: Christ washing the feet of one of the disciples with peripheral legend I AM AMONG YOU AS HE THAT SERVETH. Housed in the original deluxe wooden case, as issued, that measures 6.25 inches x 7.5 inches x 2.0 inches when closed. The lid has a brass clasp, fully functional, surrounded by a circular brass plate that reads THE PHILADELPHIA AWARD. The top of the case opens to reveal a felt-lined tray on which the medal sits, which itself lifts out to reveal a card on heavy paper stock that provides information on the award and presents this specific medal to Frederick H. Allen in 1949. An impressive presentation overall! Established by Edward Bok (1863-1930), retired editor of the Ladies Home Journal, in 1921, each year The Philadelphia Award honors one or more Philadelphians for service "to advance the best and largest interests of Philadelphia," and who have lived Bok's favorite motto: "Make the world a bit more beautiful and better because you have been in it."
