1955 Pérez Barquero

Style: Palo Cortado The 1955 Palo Cortado Solera Cincuentenario is one of the rare and distinguished wines from Bodegas Pérez Barquero, one of the historic producers of Montilla-Moriles, founded in 1905. The designation “1955” refers to the Solera Cincuentenario established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the winery, rather than to a vintage year. This is a traditional solera wine, composed of wines of different ages and matured over many decades. Made from 100% Pedro Ximénez, the wine began its life with a period of biological ageing under flor, before undergoing a much longer period of oxidative ageing in old oak casks through the traditional criaderas y soleras system. This unusual combination gives the wine both the finesse and subtle saline character associated with Amontillado and the breadth, depth and roundness of an Oloroso. The result is an exceptionally complex and elegant old Palo Cortado, showing notes of caramel, coffee, toasted nuts, old wood and delicate oxidative tones. On the palate it is concentrated and powerful yet remarkably balanced, with a long, persistent finish. The wine has received 95+ points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, which described it as a great old oxidative wine with remarkable elegance, concentration and power. Alcohol: 21.5% vol. Fill level: Neck Label condition: Excellent Capsule condition: Excellent Bottle size: 750 ml Bottler: Pérez Barquero, Montilla, Córdoba, Spain History of the wine / winery: Bodegas Pérez Barquero was founded in 1905 in Montilla and is one of the historic names of the Montilla-Moriles region. The 1955 Solera Cincuentenario collection commemorates the winery's 50th anniversary and includes Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado and Pedro Ximénez. The wines represent some of the most mature and distinctive expressions of the traditional Pérez Barquero style. Drink or hold: Ready to drink and best appreciated now. Due to its age, concentration and oxidative style, it is an excellent meditation wine and can also accompany rich and complex dishes. Serve at 15–18°C. Decanting is recommended. Excellent with traditional stews, cured meats, mature and creamy cheeses, or dark chocolate desserts. Shipping method: Carefully packed in a protective wine shipping box. Insured shipping recommended.
