1964 Mercedes 230 SL roadster No reserve - Original engine and colour - Four owners from new - Excellent condition - Extensive history file - No reserve This Mercedes 230 SL left the factory in August 1964, finished in off-white with a dark blue interior and hood. It was sold new to Mme Le Chien from Brussels, who kept it until 1981, when it was taken in part-exchange by the garage GLX, also in Brussels. It was noticed there by Donald Newman, an American living in Belgium, who was utterly enchanted by the car and bought it on 22 May 1981. When the Newman family returned to the United States, they took the 230 SL with them, and Donald Newman took such care of it that it was nicknamed “Daddy’s Baby”. After using his beloved car for 29 years for outings, rallies and concours d'élégance, Newman sold it in June 2010 to one of his friends, Brian Laudenbach. At the time, Thierry Dehaeck travelled frequently to the United States for his company Pidy and came across a classified ad for a 230 SL “sold new in Belgium”. On 12 December 2012, he bought it for his collection and contacted Newman, who was happy to learn that his “Baby” was in good hands and back in Belgium. Dehaeck even managed to obtain the registration “Baby” for it. Having had only four meticulous owners, this car, which is in excellent condition and true to its original specification, has a particularly charming history, reflected in the wealth of documentation accompanying it: the original warranty certificate, the service book showing the services carried out until 1983, the invoice from GLX to Donald Newman, service bills since 1982, the factory build card, owner’s manual and FIVA ID card, a certificate from Mercedes-Benz Classic and two texts from Donald Newman and his daughter describing the family’s affection for “Baby”. Its superb condition, linked to its history, therefore give this car a special significance, setting it quite apart from the other 230 SLs still in existence. Photos © Alexis Rube
