1969 Contemporary Imitation Halfpenny Muling. George III Irish Type of 1775-82, Elizabeth II-Era Irish Reverse. Fine. 103.9 grains. Whether purposeful or an error for 1769, a year in which genuine Irish halfpence were struck, an 18th century coin dated in the 20th century must have shocked contemporaries who handled examples struck from this reverse die. Assuming that the coiner's intent was 1769, this issue is also a muling, as the long-haired bust of George is the type of 1775 to 1782. Dark brown and lightly granular, with some areas of verdigris that remain camouflaged against the dark canvas of this coin's surfaces. A small handful of these are known and are always highly regarded for the outrageousness of the date. Provenance: Ex Mike Wierzba, 2010; Sydney F. Martin; our sale of the Sydney F. Martin Collection, April 2023 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 90416.
