While it is fully mature and drinking beautifully now, it possesses the structural integrity to be cellared for a further 20 years. - Viña Albina 1970 Gran Reserva (Centenary Edition 1890-1990): A wine for long-term cellaring and a remarkable piece of Rioja history. This is an exceptionally rare special release, never commercially marketed and preserved for decades in the old “cemetery” cellar in Cenicero, La Rioja. Originally intended to be bottled as a regular Gran Reserva in 1977, the finest casks were selected through early tastings and set aside separately from the main production. These privileged barrels underwent prolonged ageing and were ultimately hand-bottled in 1990 to commemorate the First Centenary of Bodegas Riojanas (1890–1990). The wine was vinified and matured for 12 to 18 months in large wooden vats, following the traditional methods of the 19th century, before being transferred to cask in 1970. It was then racked every six months during its first six years, following the classic Rioja cask-to-cask method, and bottled by hand directly from barrel without filtration. After bottling, it remained stored in the historic racks of the winery, further enhancing its rarity and provenance. A true late-release “winery reserve,” this is not simply an old vintage, but a hidden cellar selection created from the estate’s finest barrels. The 1970 vintage is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest Rioja harvests of the 20th century, adding further prestige to an already extraordinary and highly collectible wine. - Viña Albina 1982 Reserva: 3 bottles “Millennium Edition” was an extraordinarily limited collection drawn from some of the finest vintages produced by Bodegas Riojanas in the last quarter of the 20th century, created to celebrate the turn of the millennium. For this special release, only the most outstanding casks from the best harvests were selected through tasting and aged separately from the main production, with the élevage extended several years beyond the estate’s already rigorous standards. This wine was originally intended to be bottled in February 1986 as a regular Reserva. However, a selection of the finest barrels was held back and matured for an additional four years, before being hand-bottled directly from cask in 1990, without filtration. The bottles then remained resting in the historic cellars of Cenicero and were not released until 2000 as part of the exclusive “Millennium Edition.” Only a few hundred bottles were ever sold or allocated to loyal clients, while the remaining stock continued ageing undisturbed in the old cellar for another decade.
