1971 Alpine A110 1600 S No reserve - Ex-Rally due Valli 1976 & 1977 - Attractive Group 3 specification - Second engine and set of 4 wheels - No reserve This 1600 S berlinette was sold new in Italy. As the Alpine historian Gilles Vallerian confirmed, it was invoiced in 1971 for 20,615 French francs, like the half-dozen other 1600s sent to Italy at the same time, this amount corresponding to the French price plus the 15% commission charged by Renault Italy. This figure applied to a strictly standard car. The berlinette then regularly changed hands in Italy, and was soon to be found in competition: it was entered in the Rally due Valli in 1976, driven by Ranzato Carlino, and by Franz Schreiner the following year. There are records for six different registrations, up to the current one, which dates from 1987, and the ‘libretto’ mentions its various owners, including the current one, who bought the car in 2009. It has retained its specification typical of Group 3 cars and has a Type 353 gearbox and Gotti ‘Monte Carlo’ no. 7 split-rim wheels; it still has the original ‘narrow arches’ and the ‘Plastia’ seats offered as an optional extra from 1972. Still finished in its original Alpine blue (ref. 331), it is equipped with a bolted roll cage, and its original engine has been replaced by an 821-02 block (an aluminium-alloy block from a Renault 16 with an identical displacement to the 1600 S), meticulously prepared, just as it should be, with twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors. In addition, the car will be sold with a second Type 807-20 aluminium engine and four alloy wheels. In good running order, this berlinette – which has seemingly never stopped racing – is in original unrestored condition and still bears the marks of its different periods in competition. It comes with its ASI card and an Italian technical passport from 2018. It should not be forgotten that the 1600 S remains the quickest and most desirable A110, and the cars which competed in period are the most sought after. Photos © Leonardo Perugini
