1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport

1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport

Ducati’s historic victory in the 1972 Imola 200 forever transformed the reputation of the storied Bologna firm. Riding specially prepared 750 cc desmodromic twins, Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari finished 1st and 2nd against formidable opposition, including MV Agusta. This established Fabio Taglioni’s V-twin as a world-class competition engine, inspiring one of the most celebrated motorcycles of the postwar era: the 750 Super Sport. ‌ Built in a single batch of 401 examples in 1974, the 750 Super Sport brought the essence of Ducati’s Imola racers to the road. Taglioni personally supervised production, with the motorcycles intended to satisfy competition homologation requirements for 1974 and 1975. Their distinctive turquoise frames gave rise to the enduring “Green Frame” nickname. ‌ The Super Sport’s specification reflected this competition ancestry. Desmodromic valvetrains, polished rocker arms, individually machined connecting rods, and 40 mm Dell’Orto carburetors distinguished the engine from those of the contemporary 750 GT and Sport. A narrow fiberglass fairing, solo saddle, and Conti exhaust complemented Marzocchi forks, 18" Borrani wheels, and triple disc brakes. ‌ The consignor, an astute collector of some of the finest motorcycles in the world, watched and studied brand new 750 Super Sports being uncrated in the 1970s, as his family’s business was a Ducati importer and distributor. This gave him a rare firsthand understanding of these incredible motorcycles and their intricate details. As such, when he found the example offered here about 15 years ago, he immediately recognized its incredible level of preservation and remarkable low mileage. He did not hesitate in purchasing it, acquiring it from a dedicated Ducati collector in the US. ‌ Simply put, this 750 Super Sport is one of the most sparingly used and best-preserved examples in existence. A detailed 20-page report by marque expert and author Ian Falloon documents its astonishing originality and notes that the bike’s odometer reading of under 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) when catalogued is undoubtedly original. ‌ Falloon identifies a staggering number of original details, including its matching crankcase assembly numbers, factory lead seal beneath the crankcases, and blue paint markings on its cylinder heads. He also notes that, even more impressively, the bike retains its original paint, decals, chrome, and even its Metzeler C7 Block tires. Countless other rarely seen details abound and are too numerous to list here. Falloon concluded, “The number of known original paint 750 Super Sports numbers less than twenty, but those with this low mileage and original tires would be fewer than five or six. As such this particular example is one of the finest collector 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sports in existence.” ‌ The Ducati is accompanied by an extraordinarily rare original tool kit complete with its cloth bag. The Super Sport is in running condition, and the consignor has been careful to only use an auxiliary fuel tank, as the previous owner did, to preserve the precious original unit. Offered here is a truly exciting opportunity to own a reference-grade example of one of the most important and sought after motorcycles in the world. *Please note that this vehicle is titled as DM750SS 75239. ‌ car
