West Africa, Guinea-Bissau, circa 1980s A.D. A large papier-mâché carnival mask, created for pre-Lenten parades, painted in pastel hues and depicting a grotesque creature with a skeletal nose, fang-like teeth, and bulging eyes. Such masks were typically shaped over clay molds, each design unique to its maker; examples were often discarded after the celebration, making surviving pieces of this scale and condition uncommon. Size: 13" W x 19" H (33 cm x 48.3 cm) Item # 193689
