Adrian Newey’s impact on Formula 1, particularly with the Williams and Red Bull teams, is unprecedented. The genesis of his career came with the cars he oversaw for March in the 1980s. March 83C and 84C dominated the CART series in 1983 and 1984, which included a victory at the 1984 Indianapolis 500. A prominent part of this chapter was Gerry Forsythe’s striking “Skoal Bandit”-liveried cars. In 1983, Forsythe’s choice of rising Formula 1 and Indy car driver Teo Fabi helped the racer earn Rookie of the Year honors, with four wins. During the following season, with two new Cosworth-powered 84Cs, the team was made up of Teo and his brother, Corrado Fabi. Published race records show that chassis 9 debuted at Phoenix International Raceway on April 15, 1984, where Teo qualified 2nd, but was not able to finish. At the 500, Teo again qualified well, starting 14th – the highest of his peers. He reached triple-digit laps before a fuel-system issue curtailed his run. The two Skoal Bandits, this car and chassis 16, were campaigned in a total of nine races that year. The post-racing tenure for chassis 9 included a refurbishment of its aesthetics in its striking Skoal livery, followed by time in the respected Milhous Brothers Collection in Florida during the 2000s. Acquired directly from Milhous in 2012, the car has spent the past 14 years displayed in the Price Museum of Speed alongside other important racing cars of all eras. Please note that this vehicle has been in long-term static storage and may not be currently operational. It will require mechanical attention prior to use. Please also note that this vehicle is sold on a Bill of Sale. car
