1988 Château l’Evangile - Pomerol - 1 Bottle (0.75L)

Although Pomerol wines have never been classified, Château L'Evangile is undoubtedly among the best wines in the appellation. The estate was created in the middle of the 18th century by a Libourne family, the Léglise, who contributed to the constitution of the Pomerol vineyard, alongside the families owning the Petrus estate (the Arnaud family), La Conseillante (Catherine Conseillant), and Trotanoy (the Giraud family). Until then called Fazilleau, the estate took the name of L'Evangile at the very beginning of the 19th century, under the leadership of the lawyer Isambert, who remained owner until 1862. Bought by Paul Chaperon, Château L'Evangile remained in the fold of his descendants, the Ducasse, until 1990. Since that date, the Lafite Rothschild team has gradually regained control of the estate. The former owners were already perfectly aware of the remarkable potential of this exceptional terroir, composed of a deep and heterogeneous subsoil of gravels mixed with clay and sand. Even the formidable frosts of the winter of 1956 could not quite bring the Château L'Evangile vineyard to its knees. Louis Ducasse took charge of the estate, which was nonetheless drained, renewed the vineyard and raised it in just a few years to its best level. A level that would not decline, even after his death in 1982, since his wife took over with remarkable tenacity. Since 1990, the estate has been owned by the Barons de Rothschild group, which has devoted all the necessary attention and investments to it. About the cuvée Today, the new team practices the latest possible harvests to obtain grapes of perfect maturity, a limited yield, and 18 months of élevage in 70% new oak barrels. The clearly stated ambition to elevate L'Evangile to the highest rank of the appellation seems to have been achieved: these wines of great richness, with a deep ruby color and aromas of raspberry, blackberry, sometimes licorice, show an impressive aging potential.
