19th C. Arthur Waagen Orientalist Spelter Relief | Bust of Algerian Man

A striking spelter relief plaque depicting the bust of an Algerian man, cast from a model by German Orientalist sculptor Arthur Waagen (1833–1898). Shown in three-quarter profile beneath a Moorish arch, the figure wears an elaborately wrapped turban and layered jewelry, rendered in fine sculptural detail with strong cold-painted color retained throughout. Waagen was celebrated for his North African subjects, and a bronze cast from this same model — sold as a pair — realized $28,750 at Sotheby's Doha in 2009. Size: 14.75" W x 24.25" H. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 181681
