(2) Union & Confederate Civil War Letters

Pair of handwritten Civil War-era military letters representing both Union and Confederate perspectives. Includes an April 18, 1862 letter signed by John J. Pettus, wartime Governor of Mississippi, to Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard, offering the use of his house and commenting on Mississippi troops at the Battle of Shiloh, fought less than two weeks earlier. Also included is a November 22, 1863 Army of the Potomac order to Major General Alfred Pleasonton concerning the deployment of 500 cavalrymen from Gregg's Division to guard the railroad, with references to General David M. Gregg and General John R. Kenly. The order is from the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac and attributed in the accompanying transcription to Major General Andrew A. Humphreys, then serving as the army's Chief of Staff. An interesting pair of firsthand wartime documents concerning Confederate operations immediately following Shiloh and Union cavalry operations in Virginia during the latter part of 1863. Both accompanied by typed transcriptions. Estimate $200 - $400
