Robert Parker described this vintage as a serious candidate for the title of wine of the vintage for the Bordeaux region. The history of the Lafite vineyard is very old. On a domain that already had vine-plants, Jacques de Ségur structured the vineyard at the end of the 17th century and the reputation of this wine was already established at a good level. His son Alexandre expanded the Château Lafite Rothschild estate by marrying the heiress of Latour in 1695. From this union was born Nicolas-Alexandre, who, at the beginning of the 18th century, built the prestige and fame of Lafite, the wine being acclaimed at Versailles and already also across the Channel. He then became the "wine of kings" of the "prince of the vines". Upon the latter's death, Lafite experienced a succession of owners; it was sold at auction after the Revolution, but quality was maintained at the highest level thanks to the care of its stewards, the de Joseph Goudal family. Château Lafite was thus classified as 1st growth in 1855. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired, at auction again, the estate which has since remained in his family. Beyond its exceptional terroir (a deep gravel soil resting on marls and a limestone subsoil), quality is explained in particular by the vineyard's average age (more than 40 years), a low yield per hectare, and a very strict selection. In the 1960s–1970s the wines proved to be of lower quality due to less stringent management of the estate and the winemaking process. As head of the Rothschild group since 2018, Saskia de Rothschild embodies the sixth generation at the helm of the estate. She strives to maintain the spirit and quality of the estate and to carry on the work of her ancestors. Driven by a respect for the land and the fruits it yields, she positions herself as a guardian of the terroir and nature. She does not hesitate to enrich the Château's offerings by introducing a new cuvée, Anseillan, a first since the 19th century. A propos de la cuvée Since 1975, the château, celebrated by enthusiasts worldwide, has produced magnificent wines under the dynamic direction of Eric de Rothschild and, since 2017, his daughter Saskia. To produce this great wine, the plots sit on clay-gravel soils with good drainage and benefit from the influence of the Gironde estuary. One of the plots is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe and hosts the oldest vines of the estate, yielding extraordinary grapes. After manual harvest, the berries are vinified parcel by parcel, in wooden, stainless steel, or cement vats, depending on needs. Alcoholic fermentation is perfectly controlled, from temperature to regular remontages. Fermentation lasts 22 days. The wines are then put into French oak barrels, produced on the estate. During maturation, each barrel is tasted to perfect the final blend. Afterwards, the wines age for 15 months in barrel. The grand vin of Lafite is never the most demonstrative of the Pauillac wines. But it is its exceptional finesse that expresses itself after 15 to 30 years of aging, making it a wine apart, worthy of its rank as Premier Grand Cru Classé. Endowed with a fabulous aromatic complexity, it especially exudes a characteristic cedar aroma that makes it so prized by connoisseurs. Lafite’s great vintages seem capable of defying decades and never dying. A true monument.
