Five Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wines from the Cardinal’s Cellar 2018, 2021, 2021, 2022 and 2024 | Rhône Valley, France A distinctive five-bottle collection of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, spanning six years and five producers, with an exceptional provenance: all bottles come from the wine cellar of Cardinal Anders Arborelius, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Stockholm. Several of the estates have historical links to the Catholic Church, the Papal presence in Avignon and religious charitable institutions. Château Mont-Redon 2018 The leading bottle in the collection, from one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s historic estates. Parts of the Mont-Redon vineyards belonged to the Papal Domain as early as 1344, when wine was produced for the Papal court in Avignon. The 2018 vintage received 95 points from James Suckling, 93 from Jeb Dunnuck and 93 from Wine Spectator. A complex, age-worthy Southern Rhône wine based principally on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Domaine Olivier Hillaire 2021 A small family domaine founded by Olivier Hillaire after more than 25 years of winemaking experience. His sons now work alongside him. The estate owns fewer than ten hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, spread across the appellation’s characteristic sand, clay and galets roulés. This Grenache-dominated wine represents a more artisanal, small-estate expression of the appellation. Le Hurlevent 2021 – Vignobles Mayard A traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a long-established local family. Unlike many prestige Rhône wines, Le Hurlevent is matured primarily in concrete rather than oak, allowing the Grenache fruit, herbs and mineral character of the terroir to remain at the centre of the wine. The cooler 2021 vintage produced fresher, more classically structured wines than several preceding years. Domaine du Vieux Lazaret 2022 A wine with an unusually appropriate history for a Caritas auction. The Quiot family has been making wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1748. The estate takes its name from an old Lazarist hospice, which played a role in caring for the local population during the devastating plague of 1720. The 2022 received 92 points from Wine Spectator and 91 from James Suckling. Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2024 The perfect final bottle for a collection from a Cardinal’s cellar. Cuvée du Vatican has longstanding associations with Rome: the Diffonty family supplied wine connected with the Papal court in the early 20th century, and the estate’s history records a later Papal blessing associated with the name. The 2024 was awarded two stars by the Guide Hachette des Vins, its designation for a vin remarquable. Together, the five bottles offer a journey through Châteauneuf-du-Pape — from historic estates and small family domaines to vineyards linked with the Papal presence in Avignon and an estate named after a religious hospice.
