A pair of early 20th-century earthenware octagonal plates manufactured by Wedgwood at the Etruria factory in England. These plates are decorated with scenes from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale Thumbelina. The central circular medallions feature transfer-printed designs with hand-painted polychrome enamel highlights. One plate depicts Thumbelina in an orange dress interacting with a large green toad, while the other shows her riding on the back of a large fish. The borders are ornamented with stylized, colorful fish in green, blue, yellow, and orange, set within a green-lined rim. The reverse of each plate bears a blue stamp reading Thumbelina, Wedgwood, Etruria England, and Fabrication Anglaise. Additionally, there is a black retailer stamp for G. R. Crocker and Co, 442 South Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y. The undersides also feature provenance labels from the Rubin Collection. These items date to circa 1912.
