3 African Yoruba Wood Ere Ibeji, Sacred Twin Figures

Western Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of three distinct ere ibeji figures, male and female, carved from wood - symbolic representations of twins in Yoruba culture. The Yoruba have one of the highest twin birth rates globally, and twins (Ibeji) are believed to share a single soul. If one twin passes away, whether in childhood or adulthood, the surviving twin is considered incomplete, possessing only half a soul. In such cases, a carved ere ibeji figure serves as a spiritual vessel for the deceased twin, ensuring their souls remain united. These figures embody deep cultural beliefs about life, death, and the spiritual bond of twins. The surfaces exhibit a heavy patina, likely from repeated applications of oils and ritual offerings. Size of largest: 2.5" W x 8.75" H (6.4 cm x 22.2 cm) Item # 192374
