United States and France, circa 19th to 20th century A.D. A group of four brass and high-tin bronze commemorative medals. The largest, presented in its original Medallic Art Co. of New York box, bears a high-relief reproduction of Michelangelo's Doni Tondo on one face and a panoramic view of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity on the reverse, stamped with the hallmark "MET." A brass medal commemorates the 1964–1965 New York World's Fair with the exposition's theme, "Man's Achievements in an Expanding Universe," and a globe-and-orbit device. A small bronze medal, designed by sculptor Pierre-Victor Dautel, was issued for the 1927 visit of the American Legion to France, its obverse depicting a soldier and worker clasping hands beneath the inscription "Pour Toujours" ("Forever"), the reverse showing the convoy that carried the delegation across the Atlantic. The fourth, a high-tin bronze medal, bears on its obverse a bust of an eagle flanked by portrait busts of Columbus and Washington beneath the words "World's Columbian Exposition" and "Chicago," and on its reverse a landing scene inscribed "October 1492" over "Landing of the Pilgrims," commemorating the discovery of America.Size of largest (New York World's Fair): 2.5" D (6.3 cm D) Item # 201452
