A. De Lapparent - Traité de Géologie (Comp. 3 Vols.) - 1900

Treatise of Geology by A. De Lapparent, Member of the Institute. Professor at the Free School of Higher Studies - A monumental work considered one of the clearest foundational texts in the history of Earth sciences - Study of the forces of nature currently at work (glaciers, the action of water, thermal springs, volcanism, thermodynamics). The aim is to understand the Earth's past by observing the physical and chemical mechanisms contemporary to us (principle of actualism) - Lapparent provides an inventory of the composition of the Earth's crust (the rocks) and meticulously describes the various layers or strata of terrain. The 1900 edition details the geological eras and, to its advantage over earlier editions, presents a more complete and orderly synthesis of everything science knew about the Earth before the arrival of plate tectonics - - Complete 3 Volumes richly illustrated with 990 figures in- and off-text, diagrams, maps and black-and-white tables - Paris, Masson et Cie, Editors 1900 - Fourth edition rewritten and considerably enlarged - Period bindings, green half leather with corners, spine with 5 raised bands forming compartments, with gilt title and volumes, green marbled boards, 1911 pages in continuous pagination, format octavo (17 x 25 cm) - Excellent condition - Volume 1) Current phenomena, pages 1 to 592 / Volume 2) Geology proper, pages 539 to 1240 / Volume 3) Geology proper, pages 1241 to 1911 - Detailed table of contents: see photos -
