1 Large 18th century hand painted natural material example. Here is a beautiful artistic button of the 18th century from a large set of similar designs. It is in outstanding and vibrant condition especially considering the age of this remarkable example, This 18th-century miniature painting depicts a Neoclassical allegory of love, temptation, or fidelity, featuring a woman interacting with Cupid (or a Putto) standing on a pedestal. Cupid on a Pedestal: The small, winged child figure standing on the classical column represents Cupid (Amor), the god of desire and affection. Placing him on a pedestal or altar was a common Neoclassical motif symbolizing the "altar of love" or the elevation of romantic devotion. [1, 3]The Offering: The woman is seated before Cupid, reaching out and holding a small red object (likely a heart or a burning flame) toward him. This symbolizes offering her heart to love, fanning the flames of passion, or making a vow of fidelity. Dimensions: SM=Less than 3/4", Medium=3/4" to 1 1/4".
