A fine Great War A.F.C. group of four awarded to Major R. E. A. W.

A fine Great War A.F.C. group of four awarded to Major R. E. A. W. Hughes-Chamberlain, Royal Air Force, late Royal Flying Corps, who saw much action in ‘Gunbuses’ of No. 11 Squadron, not least in several separate combats played out on 6 November 1915, in which his aircraft was severely damaged by return fire. He added to his score of ‘driven down’ on returning to the fray in No. 24 Squadron on the Somme in the summer of 1916, flying as a Flight Commander under Hawker, V.C., in which capacity he sustained a serious foot wound, and in later life he was interviewed at length by the Imperial War Museum, an interview in which he spoke of ‘Mick’ Mannock and ‘Billy’ Bishop, in addition to focusing on the action which resulted in Gilbert Insall being awarded the V.C. Air Force Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; 1914-15 Star (2. Lieut. R. E. A. W. Hughes-Chamberlain. R.F.C.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. R. E. A. W. Hughes-Chamberlain. R.F.C.) mounted for display, generally good very fine or better (4) £2,000-£2,400.
