A gem-set and chased gilt white-metal pectoral ornament 19th century

composed of octagonal repoussé panels, each set with turquoise, garnet and amethyst, interspersed with smaller foliate and geometric panels, the central section suspending multiple chains and further stone-set pendants, terminating in a large lobed pendant similarly decorated with gilt, turquoise, amethyst and garnet, 31cm long; 7.1ozt, For a similar example, see The Metropolitan Museum, accession number 91.1.1125. 91.1.1125. Pectoral or chest ornaments of this kind are a traditional piece of jewellery worn across the chest, head, or dress during weddings, festive occasions, and daily life. Worn by both men and women as a symbol of their status, they were often set with table-cut turquoise and carnelians in Central Asian territories and turquoise, amethyst and garnets in the Ottoman provinces, heavily influenced by the Imperial bejewelled aesthetic propagated by the Ottoman cities towards the provincial centres. The presence of amethyst and garnets paired with floral collar settings on this example points towards an Ottoman origin rather than Central Asian.
