A George V Silver-Gilt Mounted Horn Cup by Sir Bache Cunard, Bt.

A George V Silver-Gilt Mounted Horn Cup by Sir Bache Cunard, Bt.

the natural tapering horn embellished with silver-gilt strapwork, terminating at the narrow end with a stamped silver-gilt head of a cockerel, the rim further mounted in silver-gilt and chased with an inscription on a matted ground, supported on two cast bird claw feet 20.5cm high, 27cm wide The inscription reads 'Facilis Dictoria de Madidis Atque Mero Pitubantibus' which roughly translates as 'An Easy Discourse on the Tipsy and Those Staggering from Wine'. 'Facilis Dictoria de Madidis Atque Mero Pitubantibus', 'An Easy Discourse on the Tipsy and Those Staggering from Wine' Sir Bache Cunard Bt. registered his first mark with Goldsmiths' Hall on 26 April 1901 with Nevill Holt, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, as his address and a later mark registered to Wansford, Peterborough on 25 January 1921. His works are incredibly rare as he was presumably only making items for his family and friends. The few other known surviving works include a graduated set of four table-ornaments, formed of branches and leaves (Tennants, 16 November 2024, lot 2078) and a silver-mounted coconut vessel (Tennants, 16 November 2024, lot 2079). These each descended from Sir Bache through the family. Another example was a bell push formed of a flower and foliage (Lyon and Turnbull, 14 March 2012, lot 741). It was sold as part of the contents of Blair Castle. As Captain Blair was among the subscribers to a testimonial presented to Sir Bache it can be assumed they were friends. Another item was a silver-mounted coconut shell vessel in the form of a fish with a humorously modelled face (Boulton and Cooper, Malton, 14 March 2018, lot 143).
