All auctions / Arts & Graphics / A gold-mounted tortoiseshell boite-a miniature circa 1800, French

rectangular, the lid applied with a fixé sous verre miniature of the château and cascade of Saint-Cloud, by Jean-François Sebelle called 'Lebelle' (fl. early 19th century), signed, apparently unmarked, fixé sous verre, , 9.3 m wide, 5.5cm deep, 2.75cm high, Probably acquired by Cara Leyland Rogers Broughton, Baroness Fairhaven (1873-1930); thence by descent. Jean-François Sebelle, who was active during the opening decades of the 19th century, specialised in the fixé sous verre technique (painting directly on the back of glass) of which this is a fine example. Famously, the Château de Saint-Cloud during this period was expanded for Queen Marie Antoinette, later occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte, and finally inhabited by the restored Bourbons.
