A Lacquered and Gilt-Wood Figure of Guanyin 19th–20th Century A finely carved figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, seated serenely upon a carved wooden pedestal. The figure is executed in wood with a substantial application of lacquer and gilt decoration. Guanyin is depicted with a dignified and serene expression, while the flowing robes are rendered with elegant, naturalistic folds, demonstrating the sculptor's accomplished carving technique. The reverse retains an original consecration or storage aperture, which may have originally contained an inner devotional deposit; the contents may now be lost. The figure is possibly carved from aromatic wood, which emits a subtle fragrance. The gilt surface exhibits minor wear consistent with age and handling. There are some condition issues to the underside of the base. Otherwise, the sculpture remains structurally complete and retains considerable decorative and devotional appeal.
