A PAIR OF GILTWOOD AND WHITE PAINTED GIRANDOLES, PROBABLY VENETIAN

A PAIR OF GILTWOOD AND WHITE PAINTED GIRANDOLES, PROBABLY VENETIAN

A PAIR OF GILTWOOD AND WHITE PAINTED GIRANDOLES PROBABLY VENETIAN, 18TH CENTURY The etched plates with allegorical classical figures, the frames carved with vine leaves, with twin candle branches 87cm high, 58cm wide Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks, minor losses to the carving eg, leaf tips, the painted and gilded decoration worn and chipped, they would certainly benefit from a light clean. There is some old (inactive) woodworm in the frames. Both frames with notches cut out to the upper corners of the frames suggesting there may have been some addition decoration attached (these notches now filled and they are possibly nothing more than workshop mistakes made at the time of construction of the frames). Original wire loops for hanging. The candle branches probably added. Both mirrors are heavily foxed, there is a notable difference in the colour of the light that they cast, one distinctly green, the other grey. The latter may indeed be a re-slivered and distressed mirror (though the glass old).
