‡ A PAIR OF JAPANESE ARITA PORCELAIN VASES AND COVERS EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY Each of tapered ovoid form, the domed covers surmounted by a knop in the form of a shishi, the whole painted in underglaze blue with scattered vignettes of landscape and floral subjects (intended originally to be surrounded by a lacquer ground) 61cm high Produced in the celebrated Arita kilns of former Hizen Province, Japan, this pair of vases may be compared to an example in the British Museum (2016,3001.1). Like the museum piece, it retains areas of unglazed biscuit porcelain, which have developed a gentle orange during firing. These areas were intended originally to be surrounded by a lacquer ground. Both therefore represent relatively unusual examples of unfinished Arita works entering the market, while nonetheless demonstrating the high technical standards associated with the Arita kilns. Unlike the museum example, however, the pair are finished with shishi-form finials. The scattered vignettes of florals and landscapes are executed with great skill, demonstrating the technical refinement for which Arita wares are renowned. The vases date to the Edo period (1603-1868), when Japanese porcelain production reached an exceptional standard following the introduction of ceramic techniques by Korean potters in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Although Japan maintained a policy of restricted foreign contact for much of the Edo period, porcelain produced at Arita was exported through Dutch trading networks and found a receptive market in Europe where Japanese wares were highly prized.
