A.R. Penck (1939–2017) - Jazzmusiker

Artist: A. R. Penck (1939–2017) Title: Jazz Musicians Year: 1989 Technique: Color screenprint / silkscreen Dimensions: approx. 100 × 70 cm Signature: Hand-signed Description: With Jazz Musicians, A. R. Penck combines two central elements of his artistic work: the universal language of signs and the free expressive form of jazz. The highly simplified figures, symbols and rhythmic structures evoke a visual improvisation and translate the character of musical movement into a graphic composition. Penck's unmistakable visual language, with its archaic-looking signs and symbolic figures, developed into a trademark of postwar German art. In this work, the influence of jazz is particularly tangible: spontaneity, rhythm and energy find their counterpart in the restrained yet expressive design. A. R. Penck is one of the most important representatives of the German avant-garde and the “Neue Wilde”. His works fuse painting, graphics and sculpture with a distinctive symbolic language that has gained worldwide recognition. Jazz Musicians is a characteristic example of his graphic oeuvre and an appealing piece for collectors of modern and contemporary art.
