A.R. Penck (1939–2017) - Mann mit Weltrad

A.R. Penck - “TTT – Man with Wheel,” ca. 1990s Screen printing on handmade paper ca. 100 × 70 cm Signed in pencil Labeled “E.A.” – Artist’s proof About the work With TTT – Man with Wheel comes a large-format original graphic by A. R. Penck from the 1990s for the call. The work presents, in a reduced, sign-like form, a human figure with a wheel and thus exemplifies Penck’s unmistakable visual language. Penck had been developing an independent visual signaling system since the 1960s. People, animals, numbers, geometric shapes and seemingly elemental symbols are reduced to a few lines and combined. The resulting “standard” figures are among the best-known motifs of his oeuvre. His imagery combines archaic-looking signs with influences from graffiti, prehistoric art and modern communication. Printmaking also played an important role in Penck’s oeuvre. In the 1980s and 1990s, numerous large-format screen prints were produced, partly on handmade or artist’s paper. The Fahnemann Gallery, for example, documents an extensive series of Penck’s screen prints from 1984 to 1993. Artist’s proof The present sheet is labeled “E.A.”. The abbreviation stands for Épreuve d’artiste, i.e. artist’s proof. Such prints were produced outside the regular numbered edition for the artist or as display copies. On the imagery Penck’s figures appear at first glance as simple line drawings. It is precisely this reduction that is a key component of his art. The artist developed a kind of universal sign system in which human actions, movements and relationships are suggested with only a few graphical elements. The “TTT” appearing on the sheet refers to Triple Trip Touch, the experimental Free Jazz formation founded by A. R. Penck together with the musician Frank Wollny. Penck’s interest in music and improvisation was closely linked to his pictorial work: rhythm, repetition, and reduced signs recur in both realms. Thus the “Man with Wheel” does not appear as a naturalistic figure but as an elemental sign for the human being and movement. Together with the “TTT,” it creates a characteristic fusion of Penck’s sign world, dynamism and musical improvisation – a particularly appealing facet of his work. The artist A. R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler in 1939 in Dresden and who passed away in 2017 in Zurich, is counted among the significant German artists of the postwar period. His extensive oeuvre includes painting, drawing, graphic art and sculpture. Penck is best known for his reduced figures and signs, often reminiscent of prehistoric cave paintings, pictograms and graffiti. In addition to visual art, Penck also engaged intensively with music and literature. His art repeatedly revolves around questions of communication, social systems and the place of humans within their environment. Work data Artist: A. R.
