A Renaissance or early seventeenth-century gold ring, set with an oval carnelian intaglio engraved with the right-facing profile of a bearded male, the sitter may represent the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161), the carnelian is held within a raised oval collet setting, around the outer sides of the bezel are surviving areas of white enamel, while further traces of enamel survive on the shoulders and distorted hoop, European, 16th-17th century, size L/M, 3.8 grams Provenance: Found by a metal detectorist near Mevagissey, Cornwall, in July 2021 Portable Antiquities Scheme: CORN-Do6924 Treasure reference: 2021 T542, subsequently disclaimed
