A six-panel byōbu folding screen with landscape in sumi-e...

An unusual sumi-e six-panel byōbu painted on textured gold paper, depicting an expansive landscape with layered mountain forms in the distance and willow trees in the foreground along a winding riverbank. A small mounted figure can be seen in the distance. Faint mountain profiles and willow trees form the focal point of the composition, rendered through broad, fluid brushstrokes and subtle tonal variations that evoke the delicate textures and atmospheric depth of the landscape. Sumi-e refers to monochrome ink painting executed with black ink (sumi), relying on tonal gradation, controlled brushwork and empty space to define form and atmosphere. Inscribed and signed at the lower left corner, with a red seal. The screen is finished with a lacquered wooden frame. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in good condition, with minor wear to the surface and to the lacquered frame, consistent with age. The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL or FedEx, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy. 608
