A splendid six-panel silver and gold leaf folding screen...

A Japanese six-panel folding screen painted on gold leaf and silver leaf, depicting a rooster and a hen among bamboo and flowering vegetation. The composition develops primarily across the lower part of the screen. At the centre, a long-tailed cockerel stands beside a hen pecking at the ground. Behind them rise slender bamboo canes, their leafy branches spreading across the upper section and providing the principal vertical movement of the composition. Flowering branches, chrysanthemums, grasses and other seasonal plants extend more freely to either side, leaving broad areas of the background undecorated. The panels are framed by two silk borders, while a lacquered wooden frame completes and protects the screen. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in good condition with minor surface wear and repaired holes. Minor wear to the silk and lacquer frame, consistent with age. Please refer to the pictures for further details. The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy. 997
