All auctions / Silver & Gold / A very rare George III Snuff Box made in Edinburgh circa 1786-90 by

This beautiful box is broad rectangular in form, with canted corners. The base and sides are engraved with attractive, crisp, bright cut and prick dot borders, The hinged cover displays an outer engraved frame of foliate motifs and central cut cornered, bright cut , cartouche containing the contemporary inscription " A Gift from the Fagakinyrigh Club to their Secretary". The cartouche displays engraved tied ribbons above and foliate scrolls below. The engraving has been executed to an extremely high standard and the hinge is very finely concealed by the decoration. The cover opens up to reveal a gilded interior and the inside of the cover is marked with the maker's mark, Edinburgh Town Mark and King's Head Duty mark. The box is in quite excellent condition. Many exclusive, and secret, clubs and societies existed during this period, of which the Fagakinyigh was one. Length: 2.75 inches, 6.88 cm. Width: 1.6 inches, 4 cm. Height: 0.75 inches, 1.88 cm.
