A wooden sculpture - Prampram - Ghana (No reserve price)

Prampram Figurines - Southern Ghana These two slender wooden figures embody an aesthetic of extreme reduction. Slender, column-like bodies rise above long, slightly splayed legs, their contours articulated by short, tapered arms. The oversized, egg-shaped heads, resting on thin, cylindrical necks, are striking. Facial features are little more than fine incisions and dot-like depressions. The weathered surfaces show remnants of reddish pigmentation, numerous small drill holes, and traces of earlier carving. A coarse textile fragment encircles the hip of the left figure. In their silent, almost floating presence, the two figures appear as variations on a shared sculptural idea. The figurative tradition known as Prampram is associated with southeastern Ghana and the cultural context of the Dangme people. It has thus far been insufficiently researched; even its precise geographical distribution remains the subject of further investigation. Some oral traditions refer to the placement of such figures in shrines or to their association with historical figures. However, these interpretations cannot be universally applied. The original meaning of the present pair therefore remains unclear. Literature (selection): B. K. Dogbe: “The Human Form as a Central Theme in Art.” In: Image, Kumasi 1977. Herbert M. Cole / Doran H.
