Abdoulaye Derme - Figure - Taureau aux Grandes Cornes - Patinated bronze

This sculpture portrays a stylized bovine, treated in a minimalist, timeless plastic language. The clean geometric shapes highlight the animal’s essence rather than its realism, evoking the traditions of ancient African sculpture while maintaining a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The body, massive and rectangular, rests on four straight, elongated legs that give it a stable, monumental silhouette. The head, deliberately reduced to a simple cubic volume, recedes before the most spectacular element of the work: two immense horns in a semicircle that rise with elegance and almost meet at the summit. Their perfect curve creates a powerful graphic and symbolic effect, accentuating the verticality of the composition. The dark patinated finish adds depth and character to the sculpture. This patina emphasizes the signs of manual work and gives the whole piece a warm, almost sacred presence. Through its formal economy, this work embodies the strength, serenity, and nobility of the bull. It fits just as well in a contemporary interior as in a collection of tribal or ethnographic art, where its balance between simplicity of volumes and expressive power immediately draws the eye.
