Aeolis, Elaia. Ca. 450-400 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8.3 mm, 0.39 g). Obv: Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet. Rev: Laurel wreath. Reference: SNG Ashmolean 1432–3. Elaia was an ancient Greek city of Aeolis on the western coast of Anatolia. A member of the Athenian-led Delian League in the 5th century BC, it later rose to greater importance under the Attalid Kingdom of Pergamon. Serving as Pergamon’s principal harbour and naval base, Elaia became an important center of maritime trade and military activity. Its coinage, often featuring Athena and olive motifs, reflected its civic identity and regional importance.
