African Kuba Raffia Cloths w/ Cut-Pile & Embroidery

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba, ca. mid-20th century CE. A pair of handwoven traditional textiles made from raffia palm fibers, one finished with tassels along the outer edge. Both are similarly sized and rectangular in form, featuring areas of cut-pile that create a velvet- or velour-like surface in the broader beige and black bands, contrasted with smoother linear embroidery worked in white and black. The production of such textiles reflects a collaborative process within Kuba society, with men traditionally weaving the base cloth on a heddle loom and women and children responsible for cutting the pile, applying applique, and embroidering the geometric designs. Size: 23" L x 9.75" W (58.4 cm x 24.8 cm) Item # 197338
