Africa, Cameroon, Namji (Dowayo) peoples. A Namji doll from northern Cameroon, the carved wood body sheathed in stitched leather, standing on flexed legs with an elongated neck and a small oval head. The eyes are inlaid with red beads, and from each hand hangs a metal disc, one retaining a cowrie shell pendant, currency and fertility emblems in the grasslands trade. Dolls of this type were carved by Namji and Dowayo smiths as fertility figures, carried and cared for by young women, and the leather dress, shell, and metal attachments were accumulated as adornment by their keepers. The surface shows the smooth handling polish of long use. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this piece.
