- Henri Matisse (after), giclée print on heavy-weight smooth matte paper (approx. 300gsm, refers to paper thickness/density). - Plate signed. - Stamp on verso. - Borderless / full-bleed. - Ready to frame. The pic in which the item appears framed is a simulated recreation for illustrative purposes only, the frame and other decorative elements shown in it are not included in the lot you are bidding on. - Condition: excellent. Never framed, never exposed. - Size: 32,5 x 63 cm. - Zulma (1950) by Henri Matisse is a radiant example of the artist’s late creative language, when colour, paper cut-outs and simplified form became central to his vision. Created during the period of the celebrated papiers découpés, the work presents a standing female figure reduced to bold planes of blue, yellow, green, pink and black, transforming the body into a rhythmic construction of colour, line and decorative balance. The composition reflects Matisse’s extraordinary ability to create intensity through apparent simplicity. The figure is frontal and monumental, yet graceful and light, placed within a flat interior-like space where plant forms, colour blocks and abstract shapes interact with the body. This late style connects Zulma with the visual world of Jazz, The Snail and the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, while also placing it in dialogue with Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Sonia Delaunay, Marc Chagall and David Hockney, artists who also explored the expressive power of colour, simplification and modern design. The appeal of Zulma lies in its strong decorative presence and unmistakable modernity. The image feels both figurative and abstract, elegant and playful, intimate and architectural. Its vivid palette and vertical format make it especially attractive for admirers of Matisse prints, cut-out compositions, modern female figures, colourful wall decor, French modernism, vintage-inspired interiors and sophisticated museum-style decoration. Matisse’s late work remains one of the great achievements of twentieth-century art. By cutting directly into colour, he created a new visual language that continues to influence contemporary art, graphic design and interior decoration. The clarity and freshness of Zulma can be appreciated alongside later artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama and Alex Katz, all of whom understood the lasting power of bold shapes, strong colour and instantly recognisable imagery. With its luminous colours, elegant figure and refined modernist rhythm, Zulma captures the essence of Matisse’s late genius: colour as structure, simplicity as sophistication and the human figure transformed into pure visual harmony.
