AFTER TIBERIO DI TITI THE MEDICI KENNEL-KEEPER Oil on canvas 130 x 155cm (51 x 61in.) Provenance: The collection of Reginald Cholmondeley Esq., Condover Hall, Shropshire His posthumous sale, Christie's, London, 6 March 1897, lot 57 (as Spanish School) where purchased by O. Smith Thence by descent to Nancy Oswald Smith (1896-1962), Shottesbrooke Park, Maidenhead, Berkshire Her sale, Christie's, London, Ancient and Modern Pictures and Drawings, 13 February 1948, lot 60 (as Spanish School) Literature: ‘Shottesbrooke Park, Berks, The Seat of Mr Guy O Smith’, in Country Life, vol. XXXIII, no. 839, 1 February 1913, pp. 166-167, where described as ‘an eccentric picture of a dog show, by an unknown artist of the seventeenth century, similar to a painting at Windsor.’ This is a nineteenth-century copy of a highly engaging picture entitled The Medici Kennel-Keeper, a work attributed to the Florentine painter Tiberio di Titto (1573-1627). On the right of the composition, a man with dwarfism is shown holding a red hat box, from which a terrier emerges. He is surrounded by an assortment of dogs, many of which are decorated with elaborate collars and red bows. This scene is set in the Giardino di Boboli, Florence, with the amphitheatre of the Forte Belvedere visible on the skyline, upper left. The prime version was acquired by the Duke of Westminster from the painter and marchand-amateur William Blundell Spence in 1870, and subsequently sold at Sotheby's, London on 8 December 1976 (lot 11). A copy of the Westminster picture, dated to circa 1800-1854, was acquired by Queen Victoria from Spence in 1854 and is preserved in the Royal Collection. It would seem likely that the present picture dates to the same period as that acquired by Queen Victoria. The 1948 sale at Christie’s of Nancy Oswald Smith’s collection from Shottesbrooke Park included a number of fine Florentine pictures, including two imposing full-length portraits by Jacopo da Empoli; Portrait of a Noblewoman Dressed in Mourning (c.1600; Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago); and Portrait of a gentleman, possibly of the Strozzi family (Christie’s, London, 8 December 2009, lot 26).
