Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858) polychrome woodblock print on paper from the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. The landscape depicts the approach to Fujikawa village during a heavy snowfall. In the foreground, a traveler leads a pack horse, both figures draped in protective straw mats and hats. The middle ground features snow-covered trees framing a view of thatched-roof houses nestled in a valley. Falling snow is represented by white dots reserved against grey and black blocks. Signed Hiroshige ga. The upper right features a red cartouche containing the series title in clerical script and the station name Fujikawa. A vertical poem in cursive script is inscribed in the upper center. Published by Tomisaburo, 1930. The print is mounted to a cardstock backing sheet.
